The much touted Iwe-Iroyin road in Oke-Ilewo Abeokuta has received the attention of the Ogun State Public Works Agency (OGPWA) as the maintenance gang of the agency began a repair effort on that axis recently.

Speaking during an inspection to the site, General Manager of the Agency, Arch.Gbenga Akintola, said that the intervention was necessary due to the strategic importance of that road being the major access to the central business district of the city.

He clarified further that, the Agency had to wait for the dry spell in order to allow his team work unhindered by the rain, thus, maximizing manhours that would be spent on the road, contrary to views in some quarters that government response to road maintenance was slow.

He further stated that the Opic-Iwe-iroyin stretch had issues with perennial erosion that until now always block an entire lane, leaving road users with the other lane to ply during the raining season, thus necessitating the need for an underground culvert that would link the water coming from the Iwe- royin area to the drainage along the Business District, just as he stated
that the drains along that area would be desilted to allow for free flow of water as the raining season approaches.

In his word, “we are trying to make this road accessible for our road users through proper channelization of the expected water that will always come from the Housing Estate and the Iwe-Iroyin junctions, and to control this, we are placing culverts underneath the road which will lead the water to the drains on the otherside” Akintola said.

In a related development, the General Manager of the Agency, Arch.Gbenga Akintola has disclosed that the remaining bad sections of the
Sagamu-Abeokuta express road has been fixed.

He however added that maintenance work on that road was an on-going process which attention would be devoted to every time it is needed.
