The Governing Council of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has said the suspension of the University’s planned convocation by the National Universities Commission (NUC) is the fault of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe.

NUC had on March 4, 2020, directed the UNILAG management to suspend the 2020 convocation ceremonies previously slated for March 9 to March 13. This came on the heels of allegations that the management had failed to obtain approval for the convocation ceremonies.

In a letter made available to newsmen after the governing council met on Saturday, “Council was guided by the audio recording of the special meeting held on Tuesday, 21st January 2020 and Wednesday, 22 January 2020 in order to clarify claims by the Vice-Chancellor that the convocation ceremonies were brought to council for approval.”

“The audio recording, the minutes of these meetings as well as the Agenda/Notice of Meeting confirmed that the convocation budget was the only item formally brought to the January 2020 special meeting.”

“Council was also verbally informed of the proposed convocation lecturer and this choice was discussed. However, the convocation programme was not listed as an item on the Agenda of the Special Meeting of Council and there were no supporting documents on the programme tabled during the January 2020 Special Council meeting.”

“The position of Council was confirmed by the audio recording of the meeting of Council which was fully played to the entire Council on Wednesday, 4 March 2020.”

UNILAG’s management was further accused of disregarding the procedures for the conferment of honorary degrees as required by law. It was alleged that the council approval was not given to the management for the l honorary awardees list released by the university
