Lagos – An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Friday fixed July 17, to hear the outcome of a psychiatric evaluation of a woman, Oluwafunmilola Adisa, 22, charged with drowning her one and a half-year-old daughter.

The defendant was on May 27 arraigned by the police on a count charge of murder.

The Prosecutor, DSP. Yetunde Cardoso, had told the court that the defendant committed the alleged offence on May 11 at about 8:20 p.m. at Plot 222, 21/211 Road, Gowon Estate in Iyana Ipaja, near Lagos.

Cardoso said the defendant unlawfully killed her child, Oluwanifemi Adisa, by drowning her inside a bucket of water.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The defendant’s plea was, however, not taken.

Section 223 provides death as punishment for murder.

The Magistrate, Mrs K. O. Doja-Ojo, however, remanded Adisa at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Psychiatric Department for psychiatric evaluation.

Adisa’s remand followed after the Director, Office of the Public Defender, Lagos State, Dr Babajide Martins, had urged the court to remand the defendant in a hospital for psychiatric evaluation.

At the resumed hearing on Friday, the Office of Public Defender (OPD), informed the court that the psychiatric evaluation had not been concluded.

The OPD official said that the psychiatric hospital asked for more time to enable them conclude the evaluation.

The magistrate, however, granted the application and adjourned the case until July 17 for the outcome of the psychiatric evaluation. (NAN)
